When should you buy a car? If you’ve got the time to wait, there are definitely certain times of the year that are better than others. Below are four of the times that it’s least expensive to buy a car.
End of the Model Year-
This specific time of year to buy a car tends to vary by model, but you can often find a great deal right before the new year’s models start to arrive at a dealership. There’s more incentive to get these cars off the lot and less time to do so, which can often work in favor of the consumer. The end of the model year might not come at the end of the calendar year, though, so you’ll need to pay attention to your preferred manufacturer’s release dates to figure out how this one will work for you.
Memorial Day-
Memorial Day is traditionally a huge discount day in the car world. Many dealers hold huge sales and the sheer volume of vehicles moving during this time makes many salespeople more likely to make a deal. It’s not only the big dealers that tend to slash prices during this time – many smaller dealers are often willing to negotiate if they think they can take advantage the competition’s pricing. The entire month of May is usually great for buying a car, but you’ll definitely find most of the best deals during Memorial Day weekend.
December-
The end of the year is a great time for deals. Not only are there often holiday prices in effect, but many dealers are trying to bring a successful quarter or year to a close. Dealers have a great deal of incentive to move product during this time of year, which tends to translate into better prices for buyers. These sales tend to start on Black Friday in November and run all the way through the beginning of the New Year, so buyers do still typically have time to do their research and figure out how to save the most on a vehicle.
New Year’s Day-
New Year’s Day is absolutely one of the best days of the year to buy a car, but not because of any sales. Instead, it’s useful because almost no one buys a car on this day. The lots are desolate and the salespeople who are stuck at work usually have no one to talk to. If you are able to hit a lot on the first day of the new year, you’ve generally got a better chance of helping a salesperson to make his or her first and only sale of the day. You’d be surprised by how low some will go just to make a sale.
The dates above are commonly the best for car buying. There are other sales throughout the year, so make sure to keep your eyes open. If you can find a time that combines the end of a fiscal quarter, a holiday and a new model hitting the showroom, you should be able to find even better prices.
